![]() I'm the culprit that steered him towards the 7mm mag as a one gun for everything in the lower 48. I reckon most people don't shoot their 7mm mags as much as Jake but then he is a young outdoorsman and has just the one centerfire for everything. Hain't nobody trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes.just wondering why the throat in Jake's gun is toast already. It likes 120 grain bullets with any powder that will get around 3100 fps which is about what Jake's 7mag does with 154s. I just looked at it with the bore scope and there isn't a hint of throat erosion. I have had my Vanguard 7mm-08 since 2010 and shot it 1000 rounds each of the first two seasons at the range. I still got 2500 rounds out of that barrel. I took one of my 243s prairie dog hunting and had it so hot you could smell the varnish in the barrel channel cooking. It was a new gun when he got it and he broke it in properly, which is something that I have never done. He has 50 rounds left out of that 4th loading. Smitty of the NorthNot a chance Smitty! I taught him to reload! He bought 200 rounds of brass and has loaded them all 4 times. ![]() I don't shoot my 7 mags enough to worry about barrel life. Super hot loads? Rapid Fire? Maybe, he mis-clued you? by a few rounds or a few thousand. What do you 7mm mag guys have to say about this? What kind of barrel life are you getting?I really cawn't say, suh. They go on to say that the 7mm mag is "some what" easier on barrels. My old Hornady manual says that they burned out several 264 barrels doing load development for that manual. I personally have burned out several 243 barrels but it takes 3,000 rounds or more to make the throat of the bore look like that 7mm mag does at 750! I know the 264 Win Mag is real hard on barrels. I have heard the 243 being referred to as a barrel burner. He shoots mostly 154 grain bullets with H4831 powder. A bore scope reveals lots of fire cutting and fine cracks. The first 4 inches of the rifling are gone. A friend of mine has a 4 year old Weatherby Vanguard 7mm mag. ![]()
